Imagine finding life in a place where ice, seawater, and near-boiling volcanic heat exist side by side.
Scientists working in Antarctica recently discovered a new microorganism living in volcanic sediments on Deception Island, one of the most unusual environments on Earth. The organism survives in conditions that would seem impossible: surrounded by Antarctic ice while living in sediments heated to almost 100°C.
For astrobiologists, discoveries like this are exciting because they help answer one of humanity’s biggest questions:

At Spaceward Bound, we explore this question with students by investigating some of Earth’s most extreme environments. During our programmes, students examine rocks from geothermal regions, learn about microbial communities living in hot springs, and discover how life can adapt to environments once thought uninhabitable.
These extremophiles, organisms that thrive in extreme conditions, help scientists understand what might be possible elsewhere in the Solar System.
