Exploring light pollution, dark sky preservation and the relationship between lighting, ecology, astronomy and human wellbeing.

Dark skies have evolved beyond being an astronomy issue. Artificial light at night affects wildlife, ecosystems, human sleep cycles and our ability to observe the Universe. This SpacewardBound NZ course explores light pollution, dark sky preservation, and environmental stewardship through astronomy, ecology, and real-world observing experiences at our Star Safari Observatory in the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve. Participants are also invited to explore our Moon Garden — a sanctuary for nocturnal pollinators and nightlife restoration under some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s darkest skies.

Artificial light has transformed the way humans live, but it has also changed our relationship with the night sky. This course explores light pollution, dark sky preservation and the impacts of artificial lighting on astronomy, ecosystems, energy use and human wellbeing. Through observing, discussion and real-world examples from the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve, participants investigate how lighting choices shape both the environment and our experience of the night.

SpacewardBound NZ teaches dark sky and light pollution courses from our Star Safari Observatory in the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve, supporting astronomy education, sustainability and environmental awareness under some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s darkest skies.
