Observation is one of the foundations of science. This SpacewardBound NZ course explores practical astronomy, observing skills and ways to connect students with the night sky through direct experience and exploration. Taught from our Star Safari Observatory in the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve, the course supports teachers and curious learners wanting to explore astronomy under some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s darkest skies.

Learning to observe the night sky can transform the way we teach astronomy, navigation and our place in the Universe. This course introduces practical observing skills, telescope basics and ways to connect students with the changing sky through direct experience and exploration. Sessions may include naked-eye astronomy, binoculars, telescopes and observing under dark skies in the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve.
