Navigation & Storytelling

Exploring navigation, storytelling and humanity’s relationship with the sky through astronomy, wayfinding and cultural knowledge.
How did humans navigate before GPS, satellites and modern maps? This SpacewardBound NZ course explores celestial navigation, storytelling and humanity’s relationship with the sky through astronomy, wayfinding and cultural knowledge systems. From Matariki to Pacific navigation, participants investigate how observation and storytelling shaped the way people understood the world around them.

Long before satellites and GPS, people navigated oceans, landscapes and seasons by observing the stars, the Sun, the Moon and the natural world around them. This course explores celestial navigation, storytelling and the human relationship with the sky through astronomy, exploration and cultural knowledge systems. Teachers are introduced to the ways in which observation, memory, and storytelling have shaped navigation traditions across cultures, including European and Pacific navigation.

This course draws on astronomy, exploration, indigenous navigation traditions and the storytelling experiences developed through SpacewardBound NZ outreach, expeditions and collaborations. The course may include astronomy, wayfinding, seasonal skies, Matariki and the role of storytelling in preserving and transmitting knowledge across generations.

Navigation connects science with human experience. By exploring how people understood direction, time and place through careful observation of the natural world, students develop scientific observation skills alongside cultural understanding, systems thinking and an appreciation for humanity’s long relationship with the sky.
